Lobar pneumonia is a form of pneumonia characterized by inflammatory exudate within the intra-alveolar space resulting in consolidation that affects a large and continuous area of the lobe of a lung. It is one of the two anatomic classifications of pneumonia (the other being bronchopneumonia).
In lobar pneumonia a whole lobe of lung tissue (or at least, a large part of a lobe) is affected at the same time. In bronchopneumonia, on the other hand, the disease is usually less extensive and starts in the bronchi and bronchioles before spreading to affect patches of lung tissue in one or both lungs.
